Last week the Israel Antiquities Authority announced that it has uncovered some spectacular mosaics at Hirbat Midras (Horbat Midras) - this location is associated with the home and burial place of the prophet Zechariah and was an important site during the Second Temple period until it was destroyed in the Bar Kochba Revolt. Some of the remains are part of a Byzantine Church that is built into a Second Temple period structure. The site includes some extensive hiding places. Coins from both the Great Revolt (66-70) & Bar Kochba (132-135) Uprising were discovered, together with period pottery and vessels.
The findings are about to be covered until the necessary conservation and development can take place to open the site to the public. In the mean time enjoy this short video of the finds. Israel Inside Out is grateful to David Eisenstadt our guide in residence and Jonathan Weisberg for sharing this footage and photos which can be found in our Hirbat Midras Photo Album. David described some of the mosaics as being on par with some of the famous Tzippori mosaics.
