Christian Quarter Album

The Christian Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City is home to some of the holiest sites in Christendom – including the Via Dolorosa and Church of the Holy Sepulchre. There are also many other churches and a part of the main Old City souk (market) giving an amazing atmosphere.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the most visited sites in the Christian Quarter, particularly by pilgrims. The main denominations sharing property over parts of the church include Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Armenian Apostolic, as well as lesser Christian denominations.

The Christian Quarter is the home of many places of worship for a variety of Christian denominations: the Greek Melkite Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Virgin (a Greek Catholic church), the Co-Cathedral of the Most Holy Name of Jesus (Roman Catholic), Lutheran Church of the Redeemer (the only Protestant church in the area), and Church of Saint John the Baptist (Greek Orthodox).

There are even a couple of Muslim mosques in the area: the Mosque of Omar and the Al-Khanqah al-Salahiyya Mosque, both of which flank the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

In the Christian Quarter you can also find the Muristan, a complex of streets and shops.

This is usually the ideal place to start your journey in the Holy Land and a key destination to any Christian tour.

It is accessible through the New Gate in the north and through Jaffa Gate and Damascus Gate in the south.

If you are going to visit the Christian Quarter for the first time, you are likely to encounter street vendors that sell a variety of items (but these items are almost identical to those sold at the Jewish Quarter and Muslim Quarter in the Old City). Here you will find and purchase hand-made items, such as souvenirs, pottery, and hand-woven gowns and other items of clothing. Bargaining with vendors is a common practice, so make sure you are able to negotiate a good price before purchasing items. So make sure to up your bargaining game so that you can bring as many souvenirs as you want.
